Chapter Ten

When Melanie got to the car, she wanted to call her mom and tell her immediately that she was in love with Bailey, and sick of living a line life she didn’t even care about. But she held back, knowing deep down that if she told her mom this now, it would spell trouble. So, Melanie went home, going to her computer and researching various aspects of nursing.

It appeared there was a great nursing school in the area. She decided to apply for scholarships, since she probably would need all the help she could get when she finally did tell her mother. She managed to score a little bit of financial aid, but wouldn’t hear about the results or her acceptance to that the nursing school until about a week from now, which was right before Christmas.

This gave Melanie time to prepare.

While her mother did bark at the dinner table that she wanted Melanie to keep up with her modeling, and Melanie would try to weasel her way out of it, she was poring over her studies, taking her tests, and working to finish up her basic online education. In order for this to work, she needed to be done super quick, and she felt that urge grow within her.

There was something that felt wrong about this, though. Something that felt ominous in the air.

It was about three days after she submitted everything that she heard it. She was heading downstairs to grab get a bit glass of water, when she heard her mother on the phone talking to someone.

"Yes. She is definitely willing. I want her to travel the world and work with this company. She told me that she does have other interests, but she would have to be a complete dumbass to not work with you. Yes, I get it. She won’t have a choice in the matter. I really don’t care,” she said.

There were some more garbled sounds, and then, Melanie realized the truth of it. She was about to be thrown into a job that she hated, away from Bailey. While she wouldn't mind the travel aspect, the fact that her mother would be there with her the entire time sounded awful, and it stressed her out.

"Fucking shit,” she said.

She rushed to her room, checking her applications. Fortunately, the scholarships had started to flood in, but she wouldn’t know about the ultimate answer about her acceptance into the school she wanted to until a few more days from now. Melanie prayed for this, but she also wondered how she would break it to her mother.

They were about to fight, that was for sure. Bailey and Melanie wanted to be together, and that’s exactly what Melanie desired. She wanted to help others, to live out her dream of being a nurse. But, her mother wanted to groom her into the perfect little model, to continue to achieve beauty standards that she felt were wrong. It all just frustrated her, and she hated that she was going through all of this right before Christmas.
